NAB 2026: Appear Introduces the New X5 Small Form Factor Platform
In this update from the NAB 2026 show floor, Techtel speaks with Alex Pannell, Chief Commercial Officer at Appear, to discuss the latest advancements in their media processing portfolio. While Appear is widely recognized for the high-density X20 foundational platform, this year’s focus is on expanding versatility for live production.
Key Highlights:
The Industry-Leading X20: Appear continues to showcase the X20 platform, known as the densest in the industry. In a 2RU chassis, it can process 96 full HEVC HD channels, making it a staple for IP, satellite, core, and edge live sports contribution.
Introducing the X5: Now available for general release, the X5 is a beautifully engineered small form factor unit designed specifically for remote production and lower-scale production needs.
Compact Power: Despite its size, the X5 supports four encodes and two decodes simultaneously.
Connectivity and Future Updates: The unit supports IP, SDI, and SRT. Additionally, Appear announced that JPEG XS support will be added to the X5 in Q3 of this year.
The X5 serves as the perfect portable complement to the existing X portfolio, bringing Appear’s signature density and reliability to a more mobile and flexible format.

Key Hardware and Robotic Systems
Integrated Floor System: Features a flat, walkable track that can be combined with various lift sizes.
Omniglide Pedestal: An omnidirectional, free-roaming pedestal available in both wired and wireless versions. It can be outfitted with different lift heights or a robotic jib, which serves as an alternative to manual jibs.
Modular Components: The systems are highly modular, allowing components like elevators and pan-and-tilt heads to be swapped between different bases, such as moving a telescope lift from an Omniglide to a ceiling mount or floor track.
Ceiling Track and PTZ Cameras: The display included ceiling track systems and a new EVS PTZ camera designed to bridge the price and performance gap between standard PTZ units and discrete professional head/camera/lens setups.
Xfly Cable Camera: A studio version of their stadium cable camera system was shown. For safety and redundancy, it utilizes a dual-rope system at each corner, totaling eight ropes.
Robotic Arm: A compact robotic arm suitable for small studios or mobile flight cases. It is designed for virtual and augmented reality applications and does not require counterweights.

Coron Control System: EVS introduced the award-winning Coron system, developed to unify the control of all EVS robotic families (formerly three separate systems) into a single platform.

IPMX Support: The VB440 now includes full IPMX support. This enables monitoring of non-standard broadcast pixel grids, which is critical for sports and live events using large LED walls with various rasters.
High-End Capabilities: Featuring a 16-bit core system, the probe supports RGB and super high bit rates, making it suitable for both tier-one broadcasters and pro-AV projection systems.
Market Expansion: The flexibility of IPMX helps the VB440 bridge the gap between compressed and uncompressed formats, making them more easily discoverable via NMOS orchestration tools.
