Screen Subtitling Expands Operatic Range with the Royal Opera House
Screen Subtitling Systems has been chosen to provide subtitling systems for a number of live cinema broadcasts arranged by the Royal Opera House.
Following the success of the Metropolitan Opera's live opera broadcasts over the last two years (for which Screen's subtitling equipment is also currently used), Screen was approached in the Summer of 2008 to provide a system to transmit subtitles in a number of languages for live opera broadcasts from the Royal Opera House to be shown at cinemas across the UK and Europe.
Screen has provided the Royal Opera House with a Polistream subtitling system, consisting of P Series processing platforms and A4001 ASI receive and transmission units. The subtitles are also prepared and then manually cued using Screen's Poliscript software.
Following installation and training during August, the first performance, Don Giovanni, took place on September 8 2008 at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London. Don Giovanni was broadcast to 113 cinemas across Europe and the UK with English, Spanish and German subtitles provided.
So far the live opera project has been a great success and Judi Palmer, Head of Surtitles at the Royal Opera House said "I have nothing but praise for the Screen team and their inestimable contribution to the cinema project - everyone was delighted with the results."
